8 March 2002MINIMUM WAGE RATE GOES UP TODAY
From today (18 March 2002), the adult minimum wage rate increases to $8.00 an hour, and the youth minimum wage rate to $6.40 an hour.
Chris Tracey, manager of the Department of Labour’s labour inspectorate, reminded employers and employees that the increases announced by the Government in January take effect today. The minimum wage applies to fulltime, part-time and casual workers, with the adult minimum wage for those18 years and over, and the youth rate for 16 and 17-year-olds.

Ms Tracey says the minimum wage is reviewed by the Government by the end of each year and any change is effective the following March. The Labour Inspectorate is responsible for the enforcement of minimum wage rates, and can also be contacted on 0800 800 863 or through the website.
