Death at engineering firm under investigation
3 March 2006
The Department of Labour has launched an investigation into the death of an Auckland man at an engineering firm on the North Shore yesterday.
The man, in his early-30s, died in hospital after receiving a serious chest wound. The accident happened at Nu-Con Engineering Ltd, at about 12.45pm yesterday. The company manufactures steel valves and fittings.
Auckland health and safety manager Muriel Kelly said it was too early to say exactly what had caused the man’s fatal injuries, but inspectors investigating the accident believed he was operating a lathe at the time of the accident. It’s believed a piece of the lathe had punctured the man’s torso.
“Our investigation is in the very early stages and the next step is to interview witnesses and to inspect the machine, which has been shut down.”
This is the 14th fatal workplace accident reported to the Department of Labour so far this year.
To the journalist: please note that health and safety services formerly
referred to as Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) should now be referred
to as the Department of Labour.
