Good Response From Retailers During Easter Break

The Department of Labour said it is generally pleased with retailers’ compliance with shop trading laws this Easter weekend.

“Our job is to make sure retailers around the country understand the rules and comply with them,” Deputy Secretary for Workplace Andrew Annakin said.

“We’re pleased to see that in general, the message got through and retailers made the right decision about whether to open or not. It was also good to see that a number of retailers who opened last year, decided not to open this year,” he said.

A total of 24 retailers around New Zealand were visited by the Department of Labour today.

Mr Annakin said two of those retailers visited had complied with the law and were closed. This adds to the six retailers who chose not to open on Good Friday after receiving warnings.

Mr Annakin said around half of the retailers visited today were hardware stores.

The visits today bring the Easter weekend total to 55 visits around the country.
