Christmas Public Holiday Reminder Issued
Media Release
8 November 2010
With the Christmas and New Year holidays falling on a weekend this year, the Department of Labour is reminding everyone to check their public holiday entitlements.
Employees are entitled to up to four public holidays over the festive season, depending on their work or shift pattern.
This year as Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Saturday, they will generally both be observed on the following Monday (Christmas Day 27th December, New Year’s Day 3rd January). Similarly Boxing Day and the day after New Year’s Day will each be observed on the following Tuesday.
However this will not affect employees who normally work on a Saturday or Sunday, who will observe the public holiday on those days.
There will also be differences for casual, part time and on-call workers.
More information on who’s entitled to what is available on the Department’s website.
A Holidays Online tool has also been developed, which can be used to work out employee entitlements.
