The number of job openings continues to rise
Media Release
14 June 2010
The continued rise in the number of jobs advertised on the internet confirms that the labour market is recovering.
Figures released today from the Department of Labour’s Jobs Online vacancy monitoring programme show that skilled job vacancies increased by 8.2% over the quarter and 24% over the year to the end of May. Total vacancies increased by 7.5% over the quarter and 27.1% over the year.
The Department’s Head of Labour Market Information, Benedikte Jensen, says that the figures confirm that job prospects in the economy are improving, particularly after the recent large decrease in unemployment last month.
Jobs Online shows that the number of job advertisements has increased across all industries. The biggest rises over the quarter were in construction and engineering (up 17.1%); sales, retail, marketing and advertising (up 9.8%); and IT (up 9.0%).
There was also strong growth in regions outside the main centres. Skilled vacancies increased over the quarter in the South Island (outside Christchurch) by 12.2% and in the North Island (outside Auckland and Wellington) by 11.6%.
Jobs Online was launched in December 2009 and collates data from New Zealand’s leading online advertisers Trade Me, HeraldJobs and Seek.
