Launch of "Muscle Minding" Information Kit

Tuesday 23 September 1997

A new OSH information package aimed at preventing occupational overuse syndrome (OOS) in the meat, poultry and fish processing industries will be officially launched in Wellington on 10 October.

OOS is a costly problem in these industries, and one that results in a large number of ACC claims and notifications of serious harm to OSH.

Muscle Minding: A Guide to the Prevention of Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS) in the Meat, Poultry and Fish Processing Industries is a comprehensive package for industry management that outlines a strategic approach to preventing OOS. Topics covered include: OOS - what it is and why it occurs, OOS and the legislation, hazard identification and control options, information and training for all in the workplace, and the management of OOS problems when they occur.

The package comes with a staff awareness and training video which shows how staff can play a part in avoiding OOS—such as by performing stretching and warmup exercises, using micropauses, adopting comfortable postures and developing rhythm in their work. Also included is a full-colour poster to display in the workplace once training has been completed.

At the official launch, world champion oyster shucker (and holder of seven gold medals) Mike Racz will demonstrate his skill, while ergonomist Frank Darby explains the finer points of muscle use. People interested in attending should contact Mele Mapusa on (04) 495-4415.

The package will be on sale at the launch (price $130 incl.GST). It can be also be ordered from Julie Watterson at the OSH Centre for National Support.
