Workplace Deaths Tragic Start to teh New Year
Wednesday 14 January 1998
The Minister of Labour, Hon. Max Bradford, today expressed his deep concern about the eight deaths that have occurred in workplaces already this year.
"One death is one too many," The Minister said.
"An accidental death is always tragic, when it happens to a person in the course of their normal days work, it is not only tragic, but wrong," said Mr Bradford.
"The key to a safe workplace is not further government intervention, but ownership of health and safety issues by industry, employers and employees in the workplace."
"To this end, industry should take up the challenge and work with the Department of Labours Occupational Safety and Health Service (OSH) to eliminate the great social and economic tragedy of workplace death," he said.
"Working in partnership with the high-risk industries, particularly farming, forestry and construction, is a key part of OSH strategy."
"The urgency of this targeting is reflected in the farming and construction fatalities included in these recent deaths," Mr Bradford said.
"There is, however, a need for all employees along with all employers, to be aware of the hazards in their own working environment. Adequate training and hazard management is essential to this."
"Together industry, employers, employees and OSH can create safer and healthier workplaces and eliminate the tragedy and suffering."
