I haven't been with the Department very long but I have had a really positive experience so far. I have been particularly impressed with the support and training. The culture here seems to be focused on your wellbeing and development. I am about to go on a training course to improve my proof-reading skills, a skill I already had but felt that given my new responsibilities I needed a refresher.
I'm on the move a fair bit in my job, meeting various people around the Department and in Parliament, which I really enjoy. Several times a day I carry sensitive documents between the Department and Parliament. I also deal with the Secretary of Labour's correspondence which means summarising it into an internal document tracking system and then ensuring it's forwarded to the relevant Deputy Secretary for actioning.
Before this I spent 26 years in the RNZAF, retiring as a logistics officer, before spending 10 years as a senior manager with InterCity Group (NZ) Limited. The issues that we deal with here are fascinating and (so far) I'm learning something new every day.
I was looking to downshift and a change of lifestyle and it has certainly proven to be the right choice so far.
