Meet our people: David
Senior Policy Analyst
Immigration/Employment and Skills
"Because of the size and scope of the Department, there are opportunities to work in a range of different areas."
Before joining the Department I worked in the Tourism industry and local government. I've always been interested in workforce issues and here I get to work and learn from talented people who have a real depth and breadth of experience.
The Department deals with lots of different areas, from immigration to improving productivity, which means there's the chance to get involved in a range of projects.
Although I work in Employment and Skills Policy, I am seconded part-time to Immigration Policy at the moment, so I get to explore different issues and enjoy more variety.
I like the fact that what we do, touches the lives of nearly every New Zealander - it gives our work more meaning. We have to keep in touch with what's going on, so that we can deliver policies that are relevant to today's society.
Day to day, I'll handle a broad range of work - dealing with urgent briefings for Ministers, developing Cabinet papers, researching, building relationships, briefing the Chief Executive and liaising with other agencies. People have a few preconceptions about policy analysts, the reality is it's a stimulating job that's diverse interesting and applies to the real world.
