The first steps
Whether you have just left school, college, or university, taking your first steps into the working world can be a difficult time. There's a new environment to get used to, interaction with colleagues and managers, not to mention grappling with new tasks and challenges. Even if you've had a job before, it can all make for quite a steep learning curve.
Start your career here
At the Department of Labour we understand that you're just beginning on your career journey and we can help you to steer the right course. Start here and we'll ensure you get a broad introduction into the way government works. We'll also make sure you have the right balance of new challenges and structured support.
Our work covers a range of areas, but has one overriding purpose - to assist New Zealanders to enjoy a better working future.
Support at every level
You will get the opportunity to participate in an official induction course, where you'll meet other new staff and learn more about who we are and what it is we do.
Your personal development is important to us. You will get plenty of on-the-job-training where you'll be working with experienced colleagues who can provide guidance to help you handle different work challenges.
We place high emphasis on training and where possible we supply formal training sessions to provide you with additional knowledge to make you more confident in your job.
Future focus
Once you've settled in, you'll enjoy plenty of variety in your day-to-day work and the chance to take on heaps of new challenges. And further into the future, you'll find we're involved in a massive range of projects, programmes and different fields of work you can become involved in. In fact, you'll probably discover a new career direction you have never even thought of before!
