Union membership return report 2012
Section 16 of the Employment Relations Act 2000 requires every registered union to file an annual membership return. The 2012 report includes information that the Registrar received before 1 July 2012. Returns or corrections received after this date are not included.
Summary
As at 1 March 2012 there were 138 registered unions with a total membership of 379,185. This union membership represents 17.0% of the total employed force (March 2012 Household Labour Force Survey), and 20.5% of wage/salary earners for that period (March 2012 Household Labour Force Survey). The total number of union members has declined by 0.1% since March 2011. The total employed labour force increased by 0.7% over the same period.
Analysis
Of the unions that provided returns, 42.9% have less than 100 members, while the average number of members per union is 2851 – the median being 131 members. The 10 largest unions account for 79.6% of the total union membership. More women (55.7%) than men are union members.
