How does the salary system work in New Zealand?

Like the rest of the world, your salary in New Zealand will be dependent on your level of education and experience. The average worker in New Zealand makes NZ$45,000 a year before taxes (Career Services).

Most employers directly credit your bank account – it’s uncommon to receive a pay cheque. Employees usually receive pay every two weeks or once a month.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is the government department that collects taxes on income. When you work in New Zealand you’ll need an IRD number to give to your employer, so that the correct amount of tax can be deducted from your salary or wages with each pay. This system is called PAYE, or pay-as-you-earn.

In addition to PAYE, a certain amount will be deducted for the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) – this will help cover your wages if you find yourself injured and unable to work.

Or, check out more information about New Zealand’s tax system and ACC.
