Investing in training

Skilled workers can work more quickly with fewer mistakes. They generally require less supervision, accept more responsibility and are better communicators. Providing the time and resources for training can improve staff motivation and commitment to your business.

What you must do

  • You must ensure your staff have the knowledge, training and skills to carry out their work safely, particularly if they are working with dangerous machinery or in hazardous conditions.

What you could do

  • Establish an annual budget for staff to take courses to improve their skills.
  • Give staff feedback on how well they are performing, so they know which tasks they are doing well and which areas they need to improve on.
  • Keep them updated about opportunities for growth and advancement.
  • Help staff to put together personal career development plans. Discuss what resources and skills they need to achieve their goals.
  • Keep a training record to keep track of who has been on training courses, and who still needs to attend.
  • Set aside time for experienced employees to coach less experienced staff.
  • Delegate new tasks and responsibilities to employees to allow them to learn new skills.
