Alternatives to redundancy

Before you decide to make a position redundant, consider the possible alternatives. It’s good practice to ask the affected employees if they have any ideas that might save that role. They may come up with a solution you have not considered.

Can you:

  • Change the position from full-time to part-time?
  • Shorten the number of days worked each week, or the number of hours?
  • Negotiate a job-sharing arrangement? You may have another employee who is willing to job share so they can take time off to handle personal responsibilities or perhaps study.
  • Move the affected employee to another position in your business?
