Ageing Workforce
Overview
The NZ work-force is greying, becoming more female, and will stop expanding by about 2030. Older workers will have a profound effect on the labour market as ageing will affect the size, characteristics and possibly the productivity of the NZ workforce.
The ageing of the NZ population will raise a number of labour market issues that have important implications for policy development and service delivery, including:
- Age discrimination and employability
- Future work place needs and access to services
- Productivity performance and continued labour market participation
- Changing demands for goods and services
- Immigration
- The interface between technology and human services
- Workplace health and safety
The Department of Labour is developing a new work stream focusing on ageing population and older workers issues. This work stream contributes to achieving the Department’s outcome through New Zealand workplaces.
This work stream has two objectives:
- Influence thinking and enhance the quality of debate and policy development cross government and with our social partners
- Focus and consolidate Work Directions, departmental and potentially cross-Government research and analysis activities
