Skills Action Plan
The Skills Action Plan was launched in May 2002. It is a whole-of-government strategy that aims to speed up the matching of people's skills to the job opportunities that are currently available and reduce skill shortages in the future by helping people to make informed decisions about education and training.
The Skills Action Plan is co-ordinated by the Department of Labour, with a wide range of government agencies involved. They are: Ministry of Social Development (Work and Income New Zealand), Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Tertiary Education Commission, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Careers New Zealand, Statistics New Zealand, and the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.
A whole range of initiatives are underway. They fall into these broad groups:
- Improving information
- Assistance with regional/industry problem-solving
- Helping job seekers make better choices
- Supporting skill development
- Attracting global skills and talent.
