The Department of Labour has served summons on two companies in relation to a fatality which occurred on July 11, 2006, when the side of a trench collapsed on a man repairing an irrigation pipe.

Rooney Earthmoving Ltd and KB Irrigation Ltd will be appearing in Oamaru District Court on February 7. The Department served summons on the two companies on January 18 and January 22 respectively.

The victim was an employee of KB Irrigation.

“This has been a tragic event in which a life has been needlessly lost,” said Mr Quivooy.

The Department is not able to provide any more information or comment further as the matter is now before the courts.
