Department of Labour lays charges following tiger keeper's death

Media Release

4 December 2009

The Department of Labour has confirmed that it has laid charges under the Health and Safety in Employment Act following the death of animal handler Dalu Mncube at Zion Wildlife Gardens near Whangarei in May 2009.

Charges have been laid under section 6 of the Act “failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees while at work” and section 16 “ failing to take all practicable steps to ensure that no hazard that is, or arises in, the place of work harms people who are lawfully at work as employees of a contractor”.

The Department of Labour will not be naming the entities being charged until the first court appearance.

As the matter is before the court the Department will make no further comment.

To the journalist: please note that health and safety services formerly referred to as Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) should now be referred to as the Department of Labour.
