Prime-aged Males who are Not in the Labour Force
Summary
The results obtained suggest that the following characteristics are positively and significantly associated with non-participation among prime-aged men: age; low qualifications, Maori ethnicity, sole fatherhood; being an immigrant from the Asian or Pacific regions; and being unmarried or without a de facto partner. Published in the Department of Labour Occasional Paper series as 1999/1.
Around 60 percent of non-participants were current recipients of transfer income payments, while almost one-third reported no current personal income source. The mean weekly incomes of the non-participants were a little higher than the mean weekly incomes of the unemployed, and around one-quarter of the mean weekly incomes of prime-aged employed men.
