How the Department works
Focussing on Outcomes
The Department works by positively influencing workers and workplaces, providing information to increase productivity and attracting and managing the movements of visitors and migrants.
Over the past two years the Department has re-evaluated the way it works in order to address new issues it expects to face. We’ve recognised the need to change our way of working to achieve our outcome of productive work and high-quality working lives. The Department also wants to make New Zealand a world leader in workforce and workplace performance.
While this new way of working has been created at a time when labour market participation is high, the Department will remain flexible to ensure that we continue to respond to varying labour market conditions. We’ll do this through evaluation, feedback and knowledge processes.
Managing for Outcomes
We’ve aligned our activities with our long-term goals and medium-term priorities. To help do this, we’re improving the consistency and clarity of the way we describe our ‘deliverables’, how they’ll be measured, how much they cost and who’s accountable.
Developing an Operating Model for the Department
Our new way of working will allow a review of how the Department delivers services and the value of those services. It will describe how the Department needs to work to stimulate a change in labour market performance by using a dynamic mix of individual and collective knowledge, influence and service delivery. We are continuously evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of what we do, so that when conditions change we can adjust the way we work.
