Description

This is an annual survey that identifies specific IT specialisations (not occupations) in which recruiters have the most difficulty finding suitable candidates for. The survey helps the Department to better understand the current scope of IT skill shortages and in addition provides information that could be used by education and training providers to assist in their planning of future courses, and by individuals making decisions relating to training choices.

Summary

The data for this study were collected using a web-based questionnaire. In the 2006 survey, respondents were asked to indicate the degree of difficulty they experienced in recruiting for specific IT specialisations in the last three months. In total, 27 out of 30 recruiters completed the questionnaire.

The survey identified 118 out of 134 specialisations assessed as being in shortage in 2006 and revealed that recruiters had the most difficulty finding suitable applicants with skills related to the following categories:

  • Application design and processing
  • Telecommunications
  • Interconnectivity
  • E-commerce and enterprise resource planning
  • Geographic Information Systems and
  • OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) and analytical software.

Overall, the survey indicated that finding a candidate with the right IT skills, as well as having good English communication skills, was perceived to be a significant issue for the majority of recruiters. An additional concern that was raised by recruiters was the issue that universities were somewhat behind in delivering up-to-date skills for the current ICT market.
