In December 2006 the working-age population (people aged 15 years and over) was 3,235,000. Out of the total working-age population, 2,198,000 or 67.9% were in the labour force and 1,037,000 or 32.1% were not in the labour force.

Of the 2,198,000 people in the labour force, 2,115,000 or 96.2% were employed and 82,000 or 3.7% were unemployed.

Of the 2,115,000 people in employment, 1,660,000 or 78% were in full-time employment and 459,000 or 22% were in part-time employment.
