In December 2008 the working-age population (people aged 15 years and over) was 3,310,000. Out of the total working-age population, 2,296,000 or 69.3% were in the labour force and 1,015,000 or 30.7% were not in the labour force.

Of the 2,296,000 people in the labour force, 2,191,000 or 95.4% were employed and 105,000 or 7.6% were unemployed.

Of the 2,191,000 people in employment, 1,687,000 or 77% were in full-time employment and 507,000 or 23% were in part-time employment.
