Summary
The latest HLFS showed that the labour market weakened over the December 2010 quarter. Employment fell by 0.5% and the unemployment rate rose from 6.4% to 6.8%. The weaker than expected results reflect the slowing in economic activity over the middle of the year and also the volatility that has been seen in the labour market data recently. However, despite the weakening over the quarter, the labour market remains in a better position than a year ago, with employment up and unemployment down.
