Summary

The latest HLFS showed that the labour market stabilised over the June 2011 quarter.  Employment rose by 1,000 people and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.5%. Over the year, employment grew by 2.0% and hours by 1.8%. Most of the annual employment growth was in the Auckland region and the primary sector.

Over the next year we expect the labour market will continue to recover, although any significant improvement in labour market conditions is not expected until the beginning of 2012, given the negative impacts of the Canterbury earthquake. However, by that stage economic growth is forecast to strengthen more rapidly as the Canterbury rebuild gains momentum. Further increases in employment are expected to see the unemployment rate continue to trend down slowly, falling below 6.0% in the first half of 2012.
