In December 2007 the working-age population (people aged 15 years and over) was 3,274,000. Out of the total working-age population, 2,249,000 or 68.8% were in the labour force and 1,022,000 or 31.2% were not in the labour force.
Of the 2,249,000 people in the labour force, 2,173,000 or 96.6% were employed and 77,000 or 3.4% were unemployed.
Of the 2,173,000 people in employment, 1,686,000 or 78% were in full-time employment and 489,000 or 22% were in part-time employment.
