Disaster recovery - Resuming Work information for Employers and Employees
A disaster can cause a range of damage and it may take time for workplaces to be able to reopen. Employees and employees should talk to each other about pragmatic solutions to help recovery. While generally wages are payable if the employee is able and willing to perform work and work is available, what this means in each individual circumstance is likely to differ.
What do I need to know?
My personal circumstances make it difficult or impossible to get to work…. What do I do?
- Let your employer know what is happening for you.
- Keep you communications regular and updated.
- Talk to your employer about your workplace and when you are likely to be able to return to work.
- Look after yourself and your family.
My employer has asked to me to go to work and I don’t feel I can. What do I do?
- Check with your employer that the workplace is safe. Has it been officially declared safe?
- Explain why you feel unable to work.
- Reach an agreement if possible. If this is not possible the Department of Labour may be able to assist.
My employer’s business is not operating. What does this mean for me?
- Ask your employer to keep you informed and updated on what is happening.
- Offer any assistance you can.
- Be patient, you are very important to the business but one of many things your employer needs to consider.
- Talk to your employer about your workplace and when you are likely to be able to return to work.
- If you have any concerns you can get assistance from the Department of Labour.
My business is unable to operate and I don’t know what to do next.
- Talk to your business advisers and work out a plan.
- Communicate your situation to your staff and keep them updated.
- Have a look at your employment agreements and talk to your employees about when they are likely to be able to return to work.
- If you make a decision to close the business permanently you may need to consider making staff redundant.
- If you have any concerns you can get assistance from the Department of Labour.
I'm not sure if my business can afford to pay my staff. What do I do?
- Do your best to assist your employees with payment.
- Keep them informed of your situation.
- Work with your employees for other options. Remember your employment relationship is important and long term.
