International Migration Outlook 2010-2011
This report has been prepared for the OECD’s publication ‘International Migration Outlook’. The New Zealand report utilises data from existing sources and provides a useful overview of key findings and policy developments for the 2010/11 financial year.
The report covers immigration policy developments, migration movements, flows of refugees and asylum seekers, the growth and characteristics of the overseas-born population, the employment status of the overseas-born population, and fiscal impacts of immigration.
Migration Trends and Outlook 2010-2011
This annual report is the eleventh in a series that provides information about trends in temporary and permanent migration to and from New Zealand. The report updates trends to 2010/11 and compares recent immigration patterns with patterns identified in previous years.
Permanent and Long Term Migration: The big picture
The purpose of this paper is to give the broader context in which migration takes place and identifies two aspects that are crucial to the discussion of New Zealand’s migration flows.

Migration Trends and Outlook 2009/10
This report is the tenth in a series produced annually to provide information about trends in temporary and permanent migration. This report contains an update of trends for the 2009/10 financial year.
The report shows that the global economic slowdown has continued to have a significant impact on migration flows here and in other parts of the world. In New Zealand, temporary worker numbers have decreased alongside an easing job market. Fewer New Zealanders have moved to Australia on a long-term basis, which also has also impacted migration flows. Visitor numbers have decreased, which is consistent with global trends, but international student numbers have remained constant.

This summary of key findings contains the highlights from the Employers of Migrants Survey 2009. Areas investigated include how employers rate the services of Immigration New Zealand’s relationship managers, and employers’ familiarity and rating of Immigration New Zealand’s work policies.
Who are New Zealand’s doctors? Gender, migration and changing living arrangements
Internationally there is a growing demand for health services. Skilled health workers, including doctors, have a high degree of international mobility and New Zealand stands out internationally in terms of the high flows of doctors in and out of the country.
- In the period 1986 to 2006, how has the mix of doctors changed in terms of sex and whether born in New Zealand?
- How have the living arrangements for doctors changed over this time period, and
- If in a couple, how have the educational and employment status of partners changed?
The Experiences of International Students in New Zealand: report on the results of the national survey 2007
The Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Department of Labour, is releasing its report on the results of the second national survey of international students. The survey is designed to act as a barometer on New Zealand’s international student market providing valuable feedback on students’ satisfaction, experiences, thoughts, and perspectives.
The information gathered will:
- assist education providers to review their services and make provision to better support international students in the future
- support policy development to guide government’s direction, priorities, and funding for international education
- identify areas of further research.
