Trade and Labour
The Department of Labour manages New Zealand's input into the labour components of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements.
The Government recognises that trading systems do not exist in a vacuum and that they have an impact on social, environmental and human rights issues.
Consistent with these objectives, the Government has developed a trade/labour framework that sets out the key principles and issues for consideration when negotiating bilateral or multilateral trade agreements and Closer Economic Partnership (CEP) agreements.
The framework expresses the Government's commitment to ensuring that the rules of free and fair trade will be consistent with the rules of the International Labour Organisation. In practice, this means that officials seek strong outcomes on labour issues in trade negotiations.
