The legal requirements regarding noise from a factory

What legislation governs the level of noise allowed to be emitted from a factory?

There is a duty under the Resource Management Act for an occupier to avoid unreasonable noise.

The Act states: 'Every occupier of land . . . shall adopt the best practicable option to ensure that the emission of noise from that land or water does not exceed a reasonable level'.

The Act is administered by City and District Councils, who have the power to prescribe noise emission standards. Any complaints about noise from a factory or place of work should be made to the local council.
