Self-employed parents application for paid parental leave

How do self-employed parents apply for paid parental leave?

If you are an eligible self-employed parent who is giving birth or assuming care of a child under 6 years you intend to adopt on or after 1 July 2006, then you can apply for paid parental leave.


The application forms for paid parental leave are available from the Department of Labour websiteThese are:

  • IR888 – Application for self-employed parent
  • IR889 – Application for transfer to self-employed parent

An eligible self-employed parent who wants to take parental leave can apply anytime right up until they return to work or cease self-employment.


The forms must be completed by applicants, and then submitted to IR (Inland Revenue).
